Studies in the Relation of the Hemolytic Streptococcus to Rheumatic Fever

چکیده

AFTER DISINTEGRATION BY SONIC VIBRATIONS THE CONTENTS OF THE HEMOLYTIC STREPTOCOCCUS CAN BE SEPARATED BY DIFFERENTIAL CENTRIFUGATION INTO THREE FRACTIONS: an insoluble residue, cytoplasmic particles, and a solution of proteins of smaller unit size. The residue (R) presumably comprises the cell walls of the bacteria and contains the type-specific M protein. The cytoplasmic particles (CP) contain some lipoid, the group-specific carbohydrate, and nucleoprotein of the ribose type. The supernate fraction (S) contains two components, presumably protein, at least one of which is part of a dissociable nucleoprotein of the desoxyribose type. Both CP and S precipitate and fix complement with antistreptococcal sera. Both give rise to antibodies on injection into rabbits. Both are of broad reactivity. CP and S can be shown to be serologically distinct by several means, including cross-absorption tests. On continued disintegration of the organism an inverse relation is noted between the yield of R and that of CP, whereas the yield of S is constant. A theory as to the structure of the streptococcal cell is offered in terms of the data presented.

Studies on the Relationship of Streptococcus Hemolyticus to the Rheumatic Process

Certain factors of climate are favorable to streptococcus respiratory diseases. In those tropical environments where hemolytic streptococcus is unusual in the throat flora, scarlet fever is unknown and rheumatic fever rare. In New York City, however, following epidemic waves of pharyngitis with hemolytic streptococcus the incidence of rheumatic fever rises precipitously. The correlation between...

A case of acute rheumatic fever with new criteria, a disease that needs to be considered

Introduction: Acute rheumatic fever is an autoimmune disease that mainly affects the large joints. Early treatment of a throat infection following group A streptococcus prevents of acute rheumatic fever. Given the low prevalence of the disease, especially in a situation where there is excessive use of antibiotics in Iran, this study intends to report a patient with Acute rheumatic fever with mi...

THE RELATION OF UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS TO RHEUMATIC FEVER IN CHILDREN: II. Antihemolysin Titres in Respiratory Infections and Their Significance in Rheumatic Fever in Children.

The view that the rheumatic process is initiated or activated by streptococcal respiratory infections has met with wide acceptance. The evidence which has accumulated in support of this conception originated in the long recognized association of tonsillitis and rheumatic fever, as well as the so-called rheumatic sequelae of scarlet fever. The more recent observations of Glover (1), Schlesinger ...

Serologic Response to Streptococcal Hemolysin and Hyaluronidase in Streptococcal and Rheumatic Infection.

Although it has as yet not been possible to demonstrate the specific role of a causative organism in rheumatic fever, there has been considerable epidemiologic (1) and serologic (2) evidence of some relationship between the hemolytic streptococcus and this disease. Studies of both cellular and extracellular substances of the hemolytic streptococcus have with rare exceptions shown that groups of...

The Resistance to Fibrinolytic Activity of the Hemo- Lytic Streptococcus with Special Reference to Patients with Rheumatic Fever

Recently Tillett and Garner (1) have demonstrated that broth cultures of hemolytic streptococci of human origin rapidly liquefy the fibrinclot of human plasma. Cultures of other species of bacteria obtained from human beings fail to exhibit this property. Tillett, Edwards and Garner (2) further found that the plasma clot from patients convalescent from acute hemolytic streptococcal infections w...
